YouTube’s video chapters feature comes to smart TVs and game consoles, here’s how to add them to your own videos

YouTube is finally launching a popular feature for its smart tv and game console apps, called Video Chapters. “Video Chapters break up a video into sections, each with an individual preview” making YouTube videos more like Movies and TV shows. Below we will guide our readers through the steps to manually or automatically or opt out completely from adding chapters to your YouTube videos.

To add your own video chapters:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Content.
  3. Click the video that you’d like to edit.
  4. In the Description, add a list of timestamps and titles.
    • Make sure that the first timestamp you list starts with 00:00. 
    • Your video should have at least three timestamps listed in ascending order.
    • The minimum length for video chapters is 10 seconds.

To use automatic video chapters:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Content.
  3. Click the video that you’d like to edit.
  4. Click SHOW MORE and under Automatic Chapters select “Allow automatic chapters (when available and eligible)”. By default, this box will be checked for all new uploads.

To opt out of automatic video chapters for a specific video:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Click Settings .
  3. Click Upload defaults
  4. Click the Advanced settings tab.
  5. Under Advanced settings, uncheck  “Allow automatic chapters (when available and eligible)”.
