Samsung Unpacked is now over, with the company unveiling the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, Watch 4 and Buds 2. These updated Galaxy devices represent a refinement of existing devices and accessories. Let’s dive into those refinements below.
Galaxy Z Fold 3
Samsung’s flagship foldable is more of a tablet that can fold into a phone and it is now on its 3rd-generation with plenty of advancements and refinements in toe. For the first time, Galaxy Fold features support for S-Pen, IPX8 water resistance, an under-display selfie camera and a 120Hz adaptive display. As with all new 2021 flagship phones, Galaxy Z Fold 3 is powered by Snapdragon 888. To further enhance productivity, the Z Fold 3 will get an experimental multi-windows mode that will force apps into snapping into windows. The Z Fold 3 is available for pre-order today and will be available August 27th for $1,799.
Galaxy Z Flip 3
The big news here is that the Z Flip 3 now starts at under $1000, enabling the phones reach to more people than ever before. The Z Flip 3’s lid display is now bigger and makes for a better viewfinder. The main display now can run at 120Hz and has IPX8 water resistance like the Z Fold 3. That is not the only thing it shares with its big brother; Z Flip 3 is also powered by Snapdragon 888 and the base model comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of Storage. Samsung says it has made improvements to the film covering the ultra-thin display glass that is 30% stronger.
We finally get to see the result of the Samsung x Google partnership with the Galaxy Watch4. Galaxy Watch4 comes in two variants, Watch4 and Watch4 Classic, which retail for $249 and $349 respectively. Galaxy Watch4 now runs on Samsung’s own Exynos W920 chip designed for wearables. Galaxy Watch4 now runs the combined Wear OS x Tizen operating system that includes a multitude of health-related features like sleeping tracking and others.
To cap off the refinements had by all the announced devices today, Galaxy Buds2 now features ANC (active noise cancellation), is available for pre-order today for $149.99.
One UI 3 for Foldables
One UI 3 now has some new UI advancements specifically targeted at the Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3. Samsung has added on odd ‘taskbar’ to the side of the phone that can be accessed with a swipe from the edge of the screen. In this case the dock at the bottom of the screen and the taskbar seems redundant together, Samsung needs to be brave and choose one. There are some fun features for the Z Flip 3’s viewfinder display where you can interact with certain apps while the phone is closed. Check out the video for more about the foldable specific features for One UI 3.
WhatsApp transfer app
Samsung is again trying to get iPhone users to switch to Galaxy with a convenient new app for transferring your WhatsApp account history from iPhone to Galaxy. There were not many specifics shared about this new app, but we imagine it will be made available to the larger Galaxy eco-system in the future.
