Acer has unveiled the industry’s first 17-inch Chromebook at its press conference today, the Chromebook 317.
In the past Chromebooks have been low power web only laptops, but over the last few years Google has not only improved Chrome OS and its web capabilities as well as built out its native app capabilities. With building out is native app capabilities Chromebooks needed to be more powerful and some users wanted premium Chromebooks. Google and OEM’s delivered with standout models like Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook and HP’s Chromebook X2 as well as Google’s PixelSlate and PixelBook Go. Today’s 16-17-inch laptops are smaller than previous models, due largely to the fact that display bezels have been shrinking. So now a 17-inch display can fit inside a 15-inch laptop chassis.
The Acer Chromebook 317 comes with a 17.3-inch thin bezel display and a backlit keyboard with up firing speakers, features normally reserved for high-end laptops.
