WhatsApp cuts virality of forwarded messages by 70%

WhatsApp recently introduced an additional limit with the aim of cutting down of forwarding of viral messages and that strategy is already bearing fruit.

WhatsApp said that the spread of “highly forwarded” messages sent on the platform had dropped by a whopping 70% globally in only a few weeks after it was introduced. Users can now send along frequently forwarded messages they receive to only one person or a group at a time, which is much less than its original number of 5.

“We recently introduced a limit to sharing ‘highly forwarded messages’ to just one chat. Since putting into place this new limit, globally there has been a 70% reduction in the number of highly forwarded messages sent on WhatsApp.”

If you remember, back in 2018 WhatsApp introduced a limit that cut it down to just being able to send a message to only 5 people at a time. WhatsApp said that this move accounted for a 25% drop in message forwards globally.

“This change is helping keep WhatsApp a place for personal and private conversations. WhatsApp is committed to doing our part to tackle viral messages,” the spokesperson said.
