Google announced a free version its game streaming service, Stadia yesterday. With the influx of users dipping their toe in, we want to provide a how to on connecting either the controllers you have or getting a controller you can use with other services thus avoiding lock in.
Getting Started
You can get started with just a Gmail address and if you sign up now Google will give you 2-months of Stadia Pro for free. Fourteen countries are getting the free tier with 9 game titles in toe.
What if you already have Stadia, Google is showing you love as well, you get 2-months of Stadia Pro.
After that 2-month Pro trial the service will revert back to the free Stadia service, which is only 1080p resolution, 60fps and stereo audio, unless you want to continue to subscribe which is $9.99/month.
If you just want to try Stadia yourself without being locked-in by the controller that you cannot use on other hardware then you may want to use one of the below controllers.
The Steel Series Stratus Duo Controller is supported by Stadia as it is essentially a 3rd party Xbox controller and you can connect it to your PC or phone wirelessly or with the built-in micro-usb port. To pair your controller, first press and hold the pairing button. Now go into your phone or PC’s Bluetooth settings menu then you will see the controller in the list of available devices you can connect with.
The Switch Joy Con Controllers with charging grip is supported by Stadia and you can connect it to your PC wirelessly. To pair your controller, first press and hold the Sync button. Now go into your phone or PC’s Bluetooth settings menu then you will see the controller in the list of available devices you can connect with. Don’t worry if the pairing lights keep modulating, the controller still work with Stadia.
The Switch Pro Controller is supported by Stadia and you can connect it to your PC via the built-in USB-C port. To pair your controller, first press and hold the Sync button down near the USB-C port. Now go into your phone or PC’s Bluetooth settings menu then you will see the controller in the list of available devices you can connect with. Don’t worry if the pairing lights keep modulating, the controller still work with Stadia.
The Xbox One Wireless Controller is supported by Stadia and you can connect it to your PC via the built-in micro-usb port. The provided link is to the Bluetooth version of the controller which you can connect to your phone or PC. To pair your controller, first hold the Xbox button down till it lights up. Then hold down the connect button on the top edge of the controller until you see the Xbox button blink. Now go into your phone or PC’s Bluetooth settings menu then you will see the controller in the list of available devices you can connect with.
Sony’s DualShock 4 Controller is supported by Stadia and you can connect it to your PC via the builtin micro-usb port. The provided link is to the Bluetooth version of the controller which you can connect to your Android phone running Android version 10 or PC. To pair your controller, first hold the Share button down then press and hold the Playstation button, the light bar on the top of the controller will start to blink. Now go into your phone or PC’s Bluetooth settings menu then you will see the controller in the list of available devices you can connect with.
