WhatsApp’s Group Chat is a beloved feature and private Groups is another loved feature. According to Jordan Wildon, some WhatsApp private groups have their links available in Google Search results.

Jordan Wildon stated in the tweet below “Your WhatsApp groups may not be as secure as you think they are.” He went on to say “The “Invite to Group via Link” feature allows groups to be indexed by Google and they are generally available across the internet. With some wildcard search terms you can easily find some… interesting… groups.”

Apparently some links were placed on publicly accessible websites. A WhatsApp spokesperson reminded people to not disclose links. The links are essentially keys to that private group and if you make those keys publicly available then those keys can be used to see the contents of those private messages.

Reverse engineer Jan Manchun Wong has a different perspective. She posted om Twitter ” A misconfiguration by WhatsApp enabled ~470k Group Invite links to be indexed by search engines. It should’ve been `Disallow`ed with robots.txt or with the `noindex` meta tag

WhatsApp maintains the position that this is intended behavior, not a bug, which is code for not our fault.
